Every cut a router makes depends on two things: the profile ground into the bit, and the surface the base rides on while the bit is turning. Control both and you get crisp edges, dadoes that fit a shelf without shimming, and identical parts from one template. The skill is in the setup, not the cutting.

Rule 1: feed direction
The bit spins clockwise seen from above. To cut safely, you move the router left to right along the edge nearest you — against the rotation. Doing it the other way is “climb cutting”; the router grabs the wood and runs along it, taking your hands with it.
For outside edges of a board: counter-clockwise around the piece. For inside edges (a cut-out): clockwise. Say it out loud each time until it is automatic.
Understand the mechanism and you can work out any cut instead of memorising cases. Fed correctly, the teeth push back against your direction of travel and hold the base into the work, so the tool feels planted. A router table reverses all of it: mounted upside down, the same bit turns counter-clockwise seen from above, so you feed the workpiece right to left along the fence.
Rule 2: multiple shallow passes
Taking a deep cut in one pass burns the wood, strains the motor, and increases the chance the router grabs. Take 1/8 inch per pass on most work — three light passes are faster than sanding out one burnt heavy pass.
Scale the bite to the bit. A small straight bit barely notices 1/8 inch; a wide profile bit at that depth engages several times the cutting edge, so halve it. Make the last pass a whisker deep, because a bit that is only skimming leaves a surface needing almost no sanding. Feed rate matters as much as depth: too slow and the bit rubs and burns, too fast and you get scallops and a bogging motor. Never pause with the bit still in the cut.
Rule 3: secure the workpiece, not the router
The piece must not move. Clamps, bench dogs, a non-slip mat — but a workpiece that shifts mid-cut ruins the part and sometimes the operator.
Plan the clamp positions before switching on, because the base needs a clear path along the whole cut. It also needs support at each end: entering an edge, most of the base hangs in the air, and tipping it dips the profile. Small parts are the real hazard — never hand-hold a piece smaller than your palm. Rout the profile on a long board and cut the small part off afterwards.

Variable speed and soft start
Speed has to match bit diameter: small bits want full speed, large profile bits must run slower or the rim speed burns wood and punishes the carbide. Soft start matters most on one-hand compacts, where a machine that jumps at switch-on gouges the work before you have settled it.

A fixed base is steadier for edge work; a plunge base lets you start and stop in the middle of a board, which you need for mortises, stopped grooves and inlay. The middle of the market is where most home shops should buy. Micro-adjustment becomes trustworthy, soft start is standard, and collets, sub-bases and brushes are still available years later.
The top tier unlocks no new cuts. It buys tighter tolerances, better bearings, cooler running and a machine that survives daily use. Worth it if you route most days; otherwise the same money spent on better bits changes your results more.
The four cuts to learn first
Round-over. Softens sharp edges. The cut that instantly makes work look finished. Start here. Set the bearing so the cutter just meets the face without leaving a hairline step — that step is the classic giveaway, and it is a tiny adjustment away from perfect.
Chamfer. A 45-degree bevel on an edge — clean, modern, forgiving. It hides small inaccuracies instead of highlighting them.
Dado / groove. A channel for a shelf or panel. Use a straight bit against a clamped guide. The groove lands offset from the guide by the distance from bit edge to base rim — measure that once on scrap.
Flush trim. A bearing-guided bit that copies a template exactly. This is where routing gets genuinely powerful — make one template, produce identical parts forever. The template has to be perfect, because every bump in it gets reproduced.

Choosing bits without wasting money
A sharp bit in a cheap router cuts better than a dull bit in an expensive one. Avoid giant bargain sets: they are mostly profiles you will never cut, and the cost has to come out of the carbide somewhere.
